How to Celebrate National Candy Corn Day with Math

Candy corn is one of my favorite images of fall! As I began thinking about writing this blog post, I started wondering about the history of candy corn.

It turns out that a candy maker named George Renninger likely invented these sweet little yellow, orange, and white treats in the 1880’s while working at Wunderle Candy Company in Philadelphia. At one point, they were named “chicken feed”. The same basic recipe is still used today. I also discovered these sugar-packed treats are fat-free.

National Candy Corn Day is celebrated on October 30th. Here are some math (and other) activities you can use to join in the celebration.

Candy Corn Collect and Sort, a free download, is a partner activity designed for preschoolers and kindergarteners.

For young learners, the focus can be on color matching/ identification and fine motor skills. Older preschoolers and kindergarteners can count; write and represent numbers; and graph and compare quantities.

You will need:

Card stock or paper for printing selected pages, Candy Corn Collect & Sort
Laminator, optional
25 one-half inch counters (pompoms, buttons, or M & M’s) in white, orange, and yellow for each pair of players

To prepare:

Choose color or black/ white.
Choose to use a spinner or a cube. Print and cut. Color the black and white, if using. The spinner can be made with purchased hands or a paperclip and pencil. Fold and glue the cube.
Print one candy corn game mat for each pair of players.
Print one sorting mat for each player (optional, 2 per page). Color code the black and white.
Choose and print one or both optional recording sheets.

To play:

Take turns with a partner. Spin or roll. Collect one counter with your color. If all the counters with your color have been collected, you lose your turn. Play until all the counters have been collected. Count to find out how many of each color you collected. Complete one or both of the optional recording sheets. The circles can be colored to match the color word.

5 Tempting Ways to Celebrate National Doughnut Day

I can’t believe I only found out about National Doughnut Day just last year! I was researching holidays and national days for a series of seasonal data collection and graphing resources. When I discovered National Doughnut Day, which occurs on the first Friday in June, I just knew I had to create a resource for this day!

1. Engage in a Doughnut Themed Math Activity

This activity engages your first, second, and third graders in collecting data by picking and replacing the letters of the word doughnut in a paper lunch bag until all the letters have been picked. Then, they use their collected data to complete a bar graph and answer questions, interpreting their graph. You will need to print color or black/ white letter tiles, the tally table, a bar graph (choice of 2), and the questions page. You will also need to provide paper lunch bags. You can find another donut-themed graphing activity at Life Over C’s, suitable for younger children. Glued to My Crafts blog has a Donut Sprinkle Game, great for subitizing and counting, and appropriate for preschool and kindergarten.

2. Bake (Yes, bake!) Healthier Doughnuts

Although I have many years of baking experience, I had never fried or baked doughnuts before. I found this recipe for Baked Blueberry Doughnuts at weelicious. If you make muffins from scratch, you can make these, too! You will need a donut pan. I typically use at least 50% whole grains in baked goods but find 100% is sometimes too dense, so I substituted 1/4 cup of flour with unbleached. I also used buttermilk powder and mixed it by hand instead of using a mixer. It’s easy to overfill the sections in the donut pan but best if you don’t! If you absolutely must have a sugary confection, add a little (lemon) glaze on top.

3. Learn About the History of Doughnuts and National Doughnut Day

Read about doughnuts and share some interesting tidbits with your kids. The history of doughnuts turns out to be somewhat dubious but this article from the Smithsonian Magazine has it covered.

National Doughnut Day was created by The Salvation Army in 1938 as a fundraiser and a way to honor the Dough Lassies, female volunteers, who made and served doughnuts to soldiers (dough boys) during World War I.

4. Read a Book About Doughnuts

If You Give a Dog a Donut, one of many in Laura Numeroff’s If You Give series of books, provides a great basis for a writing extension activity or a comprehension lesson on cause and effect. The Hole Story of the Doughnut is a recently published fact-filled book written by Pat Miller, which includes legends about the history of doughnuts.

5. Create a Donut Craft

A Little Pinch of Perfect offers step-by-step directions for making these adorable doughnuts from recycled CDs.
