Candy corn is one of my favorite images of fall! As I began thinking about writing this blog post, I started wondering about the history of candy corn.

It turns out that a candy maker named George Renninger likely invented these sweet little yellow, orange, and white treats in the 1880’s while working at Wunderle Candy Company in Philadelphia. At one point, they were named “chicken feed”. The same basic recipe is still used today. I also discovered these sugar-packed treats are fat-free.

National Candy Corn Day is celebrated on October 30th. Here are some math (and other) activities you can use to join in the celebration.

Candy Corn Collect and Sort, a free download, is a partner activity designed for preschoolers and kindergarteners.

For young learners, the focus can be on color matching/ identification and fine motor skills. Older preschoolers and kindergarteners can count; write and represent numbers; and graph and compare quantities.

You will need:

Card stock or paper for printing selected pages, Candy Corn Collect & Sort

Laminator, optional

25 one-half inch counters (pompoms, buttons, or M & M’s) in white, orange, and yellow for each pair of players

To prepare:

Choose color or black/ white.

Choose to use a spinner or a cube. Print and cut. Color the black and white, if using. The spinner can be made with purchased hands or a paperclip and pencil. Fold and glue the cube.

Print one candy corn game mat for each pair of players.

Print one sorting mat for each player (optional, 2 per page). Color code the black and white.

Choose and print one or both optional recording sheets.

To play:

Take turns with a partner. Spin or roll. Collect one counter with your color. If all the counters with your color have been collected, you lose your turn. Play until all the counters have been collected. Count to find out how many of each color you collected. Complete one or both of the optional recording sheets. The circles can be colored to match the color word.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" title="Candy Corn Collect & Sort is a free sorting and counting activity for preschoolers and kindergarteners.

Indulge a little and play Candy Corn Collect and Sort to celebrate National Candy Corn Day!

We live in the shadows of the Blue Ridge Mountains, close enough that it is an easy day trip to the Shenandoah National Park. We enjoy going for the views, a stroll through the woods, and a picnic followed by blackberry cobbler at one of the lodges, several times a year. We were lucky enough in June to spot this one on a hillside along the Skyline Drive. I did not have my camera in hand but another family member was quick enough to snap this shot, which just in case you’re wondering was taken from within the safe confines of a car!

There’s just something alluring about bears… I collected stuffed bears and figurines for years (Somehow they’ve been replaced by flamingos!) so I couldn’t resist this set of adorable school bear clipart by Marie Cole Clipart. I have created several resources with this set including these free table signs, which can be downloaded from my TpT store.

" width="376" />

Simply print, laminate, cut, hang, and enjoy!

These coordinating bold and simple School Bears Number Posters 0-20 keep the bear themed classroom decor going.

If you visit my blog often, you will discover I’m a strong proponent of teaching (practicing, reteaching, reviewing) anything and everything number sense. Ten frames are a wonderful tool for counting, subtilizing (quickly recognizing and naming how many objects without counting), and developing an understanding of the relationships between the numbers 1-20 and the important anchor numbers 5, 10, and 20. Here are two free popsicle-themed ten-frame worksheets for practice and review, one for the numbers 1-10 and another for 11-20.

Knowledge of tally marks is important for representing data. It can take multiple exposures for some children to grasp the idea that tally marks are presented in groups of fives and ones. These two free popsicle tally mark worksheets, one for the numbers 1-10 and the other for 11-20, provide counting practice with tally marks.

Of course, your kids need to savor actual frosty, sticky popsicles while they’re working! There are oodles of recipes online for making homemade popsicles or ice pops. What a fabulous summertime learning opportunity! You can easily incorporate math, vocabulary development, and procedural writing, all while having a blast. I chose this recipe, Greek Yogurt Berry Smoothie Pops from Mom On Timeout, for being kid-friendly. It is fairly healthy and requires only three ingredients. There is no peeling or cutting to do as the fruit is frozen. I used a cherry berry mix but peach sounds delicious, too! Measure, beforehand, how much your molds will hold as you might want to double the ingredients.

This is a recipe that even preschoolers can help make. Be sure to let the kids do the measuring and pouring. Use words such as measure, ingredients, blend, puree, blender, mold, freeze, and frozen while you are making the popsicles. Talk about each step. While everyone takes delight in their frozen treat, see how many adjectives you can think of to describe it.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" title="This is a set of 3 different pages for writing about how to make popsicles.

Get ready to learn about teaching the concept of ten more and ten less than a given number!

Why Do My Students Need to Understand the Concept of Ten More and Ten Less?

I have been on a number sense bandwagon for a few years now. I learned that developing number sense is critical for mathematical achievement. Number sense is to math as phonemic awareness is to reading. One component of number sense is understanding the relationship of numbers to one another.

Understanding the concept of ten more and ten less than a given number is also one of the most valuable mental math strategies. By mentally adding and subtracting multiples of ten, your students will be able to quickly estimate and solve math problems.

How Can I Teach the Concept?

I’ve sometimes been astounded (and honestly, frustrated) by what appears to me to be a simple, right-there concept, only to find students who have difficulty grasping it. This always got me thinking about how I could change my teaching methods to reach and teach my students in a more effective way.

While driving down the highway, I found myself brainstorming more compelling ways to teach this concept.

Previously, I’d emphasized the pattern on a hundred chart and spent considerable time modeling and practicing counting varied concrete materials by tens off a decade number (ex. 3, 13, 23, 33, etc.).

I’d also seen worksheets using base ten model representations.

I decided it would be worthwhile to back up a step, be more concrete and more explicit, and actually use base ten blocks to develop an understanding of the concept to reach more learners. Of course, linking real quantities to counting numbers helps to develop number sense.

So, I created an adorable free frog-themed activity to share with you.

This freebie includes:

a tens and ones place value mat

12 number cards

2 recording sheets

This is a hands-on, concrete activity. Therefore, you will need to have base ten blocks handy.

The second recording sheet helps to reinforce the relationship or pattern of these numbers to each other on a one hundred-twenty chart.

How Do I Use This Activity?

Try this activity:

with your whole class

in your small instructional groups

as an independent math center

Your students will:

pick a number card

build the number with base ten blocks
