Here are 6 math resources, great for first and second grades, which include those amazing birds.

Dress a Penguin

Let’s start with an easy to prepare freebie!

Here’s a color, cut, and glue activity for applying mental computation strategies to the basic addition and subtraction facts. Try it for morning work or as a math station.

Your students need to be familiar with the strategies. They will look at equations and determine the best of two strategies to apply. The two strategies for addition are Make 10 and Doubles Plus One while the two for subtraction are Count Back and Count Up To.

There is one set of pages for addition and one for subtraction. The first page in each set has two penguins, each labeled with a strategy. The second page has items of clothing with equations on them.

Select and print a set of pages. Add crayons, scissors, and glue. Now, you’re all set!

Your students will:

Look at each equation.

Choose the best strategy.

Apply the strategy.

Write the sum or difference.

Color the clothing.

Cut out the clothing.

Sort the clothing by strategy.

Dress each penguin in the correct clothing.

Glue the clothing on the penguins.

Color the penguins.

Be sure your students have the background knowledge and the fine motor skills required for this task. You want it to be fun and relaxing, not frustrating.

Featured next are my newest resources.

Winter Cover-Up Addition and Subtraction Facts to 20

While penguins are included in these resources, there are polar bears and snowmen too. I just couldn’t resist this adorable clipart created by Violet and Thistle!

You’ll love this winter-themed activity, with both digital (for use with Google SlidesTM) and print versions, that is designed to help your first and second-grade students practice, review, and develop fluency with the basic addition and subtraction facts to 20.

Use this engaging resource to support your instruction in mental computation strategies. Assign one or two slides/ mats at a time. Give the same ones to all students or assign them to individual students based on instructional needs. Try them with your small instructional groups, as a math center, or as a virtual activity.

Give Me the Details

There are 16 addition fact activity slides/ mats and 18 subtraction fact slides/ mats, sequentially organized by mental fact strategies. These activity slides/ mats coordinate perfectly with my other addition and subtraction fact resources.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-5535" src="https://justaskjudy.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide2-788x1024.jpg" alt="Click to find out more about this winter themed activity, for use with Google SlidesTM It is designed to help your first and second-grade math students practice, review, and develop fluency with the basic addition and subtraction facts to 20.
The slides/ mats alternate between ones, generally, focusing on a single strategy with ones providing a cumulative review.

The print and digital versions follow the same sequence and have the same format. However, the equations in each grid are in random order so you can use both versions with the same students.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-5536 size-large" src="https://justaskjudy.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide1-3-759x1024.jpg" alt="Let your first and second-grade students chill out as they apply mental strategies to compute the basic addition and subtraction facts.
Each slide/ mat has 9 addition or subtraction equations. Students look at each equation and apply a fact strategy to determine the sum or difference.

With the printed format, students will place number tiles on top of the equations. In the version for use with Google SlidesTM, they will drag and drop a snowball or snowflake number on top of the equations.

Are you looking for an engaging activity for sequencing the numbers 0 – 120? This Christmas-themed resource will give your students plenty of practice with ordering consecutive and non-consecutive numbers and with counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s to 120.

Use this whimsical resource for Google SlidesTM to provide individualized practice or review for your kindergarten, first, and second-grade students. Try it as a math center or as a virtual assignment.

Those rascals, Cat and Dog have mixed up all the stockings. Your students will need to drag and drop to reorder them.

Cat and Dog also forgot to finish the count by sequences. Your students will need to be able to click on a question mark in a text box, delete the question mark (but not the text box), and type in a number.

Your students will practice ordering:

Consecutive Numbers 0-10

Non-Consecutive Numbers 0-10

Consecutive Numbers 7-20

Curious About the Origins of Stockings…

I discovered this article, The Legend of the Christmas Stocking, in the Smithsonian Magazine. It’s an interesting read if you’re not familiar with the legend.

You no longer have to just make a choice between ketchup or mustard, now you also have to make the choice between print or digital resources for teaching! Of course, you can always have both!

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-5050" src="https://justaskjudy.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Slide1-682x1024.jpg" alt="Find a print and a digital version of a resource designed to support beginning or struggling readers as they learn to decode CVC words in kindergarten and first grade.
You need to match resources with the best ways to engage your learners, whether you’re teaching them face to face and socially distanced or teaching them virtually.

I initially made only 2 face masks, thinking the need would be short-term. Likewise, I waited, hopeful, that all students would be physically back in school this fall with print resources in hand. Now, I’m trying to catch up!

I’ve got the fabric. I just need to make time to sew more masks.

I’ve got the print resources. I just need to start creating more digital versions.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-5051" src="https://justaskjudy.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Slide1-1-759x1024.jpg" alt="Check out this set of 180 word cards designed to support beginning or struggling students as they learn to decode CVC words in kindergarten and 1st grade.
Take a look at this blog post, How to Build in Support to Decode CVC Words, to learn about my Blend to Read CVC Words With Keyword Pictures.
Here’s the new, just completed, digital version, Blend to Read Take a Peek CVC. It is a set of 100 CVC words for use with Google Slides™.

There is one three-letter short vowel word without consonant blends or digraphs on each slide. All of the words can be represented by an image. This resource includes 20 short a, 20 short e, 20 short i, 20 short o, and 20 short u words.

How Can I Use This Digital Resource?

Present the slides during instruction with your whole class or in small groups. Or assign them as an independent practice to individual students.

Select, reorder, and delete the slides, as needed, to meet the instructional needs of your students.

How Do My Students Interact With the Slides?

Just like the print version, there is a keyword picture for easy reference above each letter to assist your students with letter-sound correspondence.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-5059" src="https://justaskjudy.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Slide1-5-731x1024.jpg" alt="Here’s a set of 100 CVC words for use with Google SlidesTM.
There is a dot below each letter. Students say the sound that each letter represents, using the keyword picture only as needed. They can move the pointing finger as they do this.

Then, they blend the sounds together to read the word.

Finally, they can take a peek by dragging the sticky note off the image and checking to see if they successfully decoded the word.
