Perhaps you’re wondering if using a vertical number line would be beneficial for your students.

In my last blog post, I suggested a vertical number line as one way to help your students connect numerals to number words.

Unfortunately, the only ones I had handy to show you were ones to 12 or 20 that I used to teach addition and subtraction strategies.

Eventually, I located the 0 to 100, floor to ceiling, vertical number line I made for my classroom on an old thumb drive. Then it was easy to create a new and improved free version for you based on the old template.

Still wondering about the benefits…

Vertical number lines can help your kindergarten, first, and second-grade students:

visualize the pattern of increasing tens and ones in two-digit numbers. They can easily see the sequence and repetition of the digits.

understand the value of numbers faster and easier. They are able to see the numbers increasing or decreasing in value. 24 is lower or less than 25 and 48 is higher or more than 38.

grasp the concepts of counting up and counting down when adding or subtracting. It is evident that sums increase and differences decrease in value.

make a connection between the terms rounding up and rounding down to the nearest ten to what they see.

While I taught rounding with a number line, I never thought to use a vertical one, even with it right there on the wall!

You can also create empty and interactive vertical number lines.

How to Prepare Your Vertical Number Line

Of course, this is technically a number path and not a number line. A number path is an effective counting model as opposed to a length model. Each number is clearly marked with a rectangle. Each rectangle can be counted.

I added stars in rectangles to make counting even easier. The stars are also color-coded for counting by 5’s and 10’s.

This number path is approximately 93 3/8 inches or 7 foot 9 3/8 inches tall.

Start by choosing color or black/ gray/ white.

Print the selected pages. Use cardstock and laminate (consider glare) for durability.

Cut each strip carefully along the outside edge of the solid and dotted black lines.

Put the strips together with tape. Start with zero and one. Place tape in the blank spaces. Align and overlap the ends of each strip, covering up each blank box.

Or you can create one that folds up accordion-style for storage. To do this, cut off the empty boxes. Lay the strips face down so the ends abut. Then, tape across the edges.

Now you’re all set to post it on your wall!

But while you’re anticipating the goodies that will fill them, you’ll still need to be actively engaging your wiggly, distracted students in meaningful learning activities.

To help you with that December challenge, I have two new number activities featuring stockings (including a freebie) to share with you.

Stockings in Order 0-120

Are you looking for an engaging activity for sequencing the numbers 0 – 120? This Christmas-themed resource will give your students plenty of practice with ordering consecutive and non-consecutive numbers and with counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s to 120.

Use this whimsical resource for Google SlidesTM to provide individualized practice or review for your kindergarten, first, and second-grade students. Try it as a math center or as a virtual assignment.

Those rascals, Cat and Dog have mixed up all the stockings. Your students will need to drag and drop to reorder them.

Cat and Dog also forgot to finish the count by sequences. Your students will need to be able to click on a question mark in a text box, delete the question mark (but not the text box), and type in a number.

Your students will practice ordering:

Consecutive Numbers 0-10

Non-Consecutive Numbers 0-10

Consecutive Numbers 7-20

Non-Consecutive Numbers 11-20

Non-Consecutive Numbers 0-20

T-Rex’s Valentine Number Activity

T-Rex’s Valentine Numbers is an engaging way to have your kindergarten, first, and second-grade students practice determining the number right before or right after a given number.

This is a partner or small group activity. Get ready to try it with your instructional groups or as an independent math center!

Choices to Make

Start by making the following choices.

the appropriate number range for your students, 0 to 20 or 21 to 120

number right after or number right before

color or black/ white

reusable or consumable mats

Get It Prepared

Gather or prepare these materials.

one mat for each participating student

one set of number cards for each pair of students

10 counters (about 1 inch or smaller) or crayons for each participating student

optional number line or one hundred twenty charts for instructional support

an optional sheet of paper or dry erase board for each student

Prepare your mats. Print the color or black/ white mats on cardstock and laminate for durability and reuse.

You can also print the black/ white mat on paper. Use crayons to color and consume. If you prefer, use them with dry-erase pockets and dry erase crayons or markers.

There are two different mats for each number range. Partners should have different mats. In a small group, some students will have mats that are the same.

Print your sets of number cards. Each set is on a single page. Use cardstock and laminate for durability. Cut out the cards.

Each set has 15 number cards. Each mat has 10 hearts with numbers. Partners will have some numbers that overlap and some that are different.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-3801" src="https://justaskjudy.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Slide1-10-671x1024.jpg" alt="Try this free Valentine’s Day themed number activity with your kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade math students.
Get ‘Em Engaged With T-Rex’s Valentine Number Activity

To get started, place the number cards face down in a stack or a messy pile. Take turns picking a card.

Say the number on your card. Next, follow the directions to say either the number right after or right before the number on your card.

Find that number on your mat. Then, cover or color the number.

If the number is not on your mat or has already been covered, you lose your turn.

Create a discard pile. Shuffle and reuse the cards as needed.

Who can be the first to mark all the numbers on their mat?

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-3802" src="https://justaskjudy.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Slide1-11-719x1024.jpg" alt="Have a little seasonal fun with this free Valentine’s Day themed number activity, for kindergarten, first, and second-grade math.
Ways to Enhance Instruction

Be sure to have your students say their number pairs (given number and number right after or before). You might also want them to record the number pairs on a sheet of paper or on a dry erase board. Saying and/or writing the number pairs will help them remember the connection.

Some students will benefit from having an easily accessible horizontal or vertical number line or number chart. They can locate the given number and then see the number that comes right before or after it.

Provide further activities that reinforce sequencing numbers that cross a decade. For example, 29 counting forwards to 30 or 50 counting backward to 49. Share your favorite ideas and activities that are helpful for teaching this difficult concept in the comments below!

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-3803" src="https://justaskjudy.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Slide1-12-661x1024.jpg" alt="Check out this free Valentine’s Day themed number activity, perfect for your kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade math students.

Have you ever seen a craft and thought hmmm… how can I take this craft and incorporate academic skills? Recently I had a few sunflower crafts popping up in my Pinterest feed. And that’s exactly what happened!

My brain went into overdrive thinking of all the number and place value possibilities. You can take this one simple sunflower craft and practice or reinforce a variety of skills. These include sequencing numbers; conceptual understanding of teen numbers; counting by 2’s, 5’s, 10’s or any multiple; developing understanding of tens and ones; and showing multiplication as groups of the same quantity.

Make a Sunflower Craft

Here is one way to make a sunflower craft for math.

You will need:

7-inch sunflower yellow plates

green popsicle sticks

green foam sheets, cardstock, or construction paper

sunflower seeds

a leaf template

scissors

white glue

glue dots (optional)

How to make:

The plates I purchased at a dollar store had natural well-spaced ribs around the rim. Cut through these or at (more or less) regular intervals to make petals.

Create a leaf template. I used a free graphic, made it an appropriate size, and printed it on cardstock. Then I cut out just the leaves. You can also draw the leaves freehand.

Trace the leaves on green foam, cardstock, or construction paper. I made two for each flower. Cut.

Glue the leaves to the green popsicle sticks using white glue or glue sticks.

Attach the popsicle stick behind the plate. Use white glue or glue dots

Need a simpler idea? Just cut the petals on the plates. That’s it!

Find links to similar sunflower crafts at the end of this post.

Ways to Use the Sunflower Craft for Math

Have your students create one or more sunflowers for morning work or during a center time. This will give you a collection of sunflowers.

For most of the activities, you can assign a specific quantity of sunflower seeds for an individual student or groups of students to glue on their flowers. The seeds can also simply be placed, without gluing, on the flowers to provide greater versatility.

Numbers 0-10 (PreK- Kindergarten)

Students can practice or review numeral recognition, one-to-one correspondence, and sequencing quantities/ numbers. Match the free sunflower number cards to quantities of seeds to reinforce recognition.

Here’s an idea. First, have a group of students work together to glue an assigned number of seeds, 1-10, on their flower(s). Next, have them sequence the plates in order. Finally, they can match the numeral cards to the sunflowers.

And yes, for this activity (and the count by multiples activity below), I would encourage my students to sequence the plates in a linear fashion.

Teen Numbers (Kindergarten- Early 1st Grade)

Have students show teen numbers as ten plus a number using their sunflowers. Show the matching equation by using the free 10, +, and = sunflower cards. After taking photos, I decided to add teen number recording strips (10 + _ = _ and 10 and _ more = _) to this resource.

Count by Multiples (Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grades)

Give a group of students a number such as 2, 5, 10, or any multiple. They glue or place the given number of seeds on a set of sunflowers. Let them use the number cards to show how to count by their given number.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-1151" src="https://justaskjudy.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Slide1-11-640x1024.jpg" alt="Have fun with math!
Provide each student or pair of students with a baggie containing 11-99 sunflower seeds. Students group their seeds by tens, placing each group on a flower. Leftover ones can be placed on their work surface. Choose an appropriate sheet for them to record their results.

Beginning Multiplication (Concept Development for 2nd and 3rd Grades)

Students show the same number of sunflower seeds on multiple flowers. Write the number of seeds and groups along with the multiplication equation on the free half-page recording sheet.

For fun, let your students randomly choose two appropriate numbers out of a seasonal container.

Let everyone know your favorite math “craftivity” to use with your class in the comments below.

Carrots are a perfect springtime theme. They fit as an Easter theme but not overtly so. Crunching on a carrot is a healthy alternative during another sweets-laden holiday. In addition, they fit equally well with a planting or garden theme.

Subtract All or Subtract None Carrot Crunching

To begin with, I wrote a blog post about this carrot crunching concrete activity for subtracting all or none of a given number. This is a free hands-on resource that can help you build a foundation of understanding for subtraction concepts or strategies in kindergarten, first or second grades.

It includes a big-mouth rabbit mat, an optional half-page ten frame mat, optional carrot counters, and four sets of 8 task cards, in color and black/ gray/ white. There is also a half-page recording sheet, in two formats. This activity may be used with a whole class or small groups, or as an independent math station.

Rows of Carrots Ordering Numbers 0-120

Next, I forged ahead with creating Rows of Carrots, a carrot themed open-ended resource for sequencing numbers 0-120 in a variety of ways. It can be used for ordering sets of consecutive or non-consecutive numbers and for counting by 10’s, 5’s, 2’s, or any multiple. Go ahead, click a highlighted link to find out more about this kindergarten, first, and second-grade math resource, available for purchase in my Teachers Pay Teachers store.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-728 size-large" src="https://justaskjudy.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Slide1-1-546x1024.jpg" alt="Check out this open-ended carrot themed resource for sequencing numbers 0-120 in a variety of ways.
After creating these resources, I was busy pinning carrot-related ideas to my spring and Easter boards. While perusing these ideas, one, in particular, caught my eye.

Now, that’s an idea! Why not combine Stef at Non-Toy Gifts’ craft idea with my Rows of Carrots resource?

So, I kept following the trail of carrots… and started generating ideas for carrot gardens. This carrot garden idea is an engaging way to incorporate skill review with a seasonal craft.

Carrot Garden Ideas

Spell short vowel and silent e words (K-1).

Write 2, 3, and 4 letter high-frequency words (K-1).

Write a sequence of numbers after or before a given one, two, or three-digit number (K-2).

Record the equations for an addition/ subtraction or multiplication/ division fact family (1-3).

This is a less crafty version than the one you’ll find at Non-Toy Gifts.

Once I got started, my ideas began growing wildly out of hand! What other ideas could you incorporate?

Carrot Counting

And last but not least, here is the original idea for this blog post!

One of my preschool granddaughters loves busy bag activities! And of course, I enjoy creating these for her. She counts concrete objects to ten and is ready for experiences with number recognition.

I love ten frames and know what a valuable visual tool they are for developing subitizing and a sense of ten. However, just as there is a place for ten frames, I believe we still need to provide a place for less structured counting activities, particularly for younger children.

This free flexible Carrot Counting resource provides the opportunity to experience counting, one-to-one correspondence, cardinality, numeral recognition, and numeral formation. It includes a rabbit mat, carrot counting cards (0-10), numeral formation cards (0-10), and carrot counters. I have included these in both color and black/ gray/ white. The numeral formation cards are only in color and less color.

While I included carrot counters to print, I strongly suggest using concrete objects with preschoolers. I adore my carrot erasers but any small counter will do. Try orange buttons, pom-poms, or gems.

You will need:

paper or cardstock for printing selected pages of Carrot Counting

Use a rabbit mat with a carrot counting card. Count the carrots. Count a corresponding number of counters to place on the rabbit mat.

Simply match the carrot counting cards with the numeral formation cards. The numbers have green, yellow, and red dots along with arrows to guide correct formation. They are perfect for finger tracing, using dry erase markers, or play dough ropes. Naming the numeral while engaged in forming it helps to develop recognition.

Are you looking for a way to celebrate every day? Look no further than national days! Celebrate National Pumpkin Day on October 26th this year. Even though Its origins are unknown, that shouldn’t keep you from joining the fun!

There are pumpkins aplenty in October, making it the perfect time to incorporate them into your classroom learning. Although your kids may fuss about it after Halloween, you can even continue this theme into November!

Some popular activities include reading books, visiting a pumpkin patch, investigating pumpkins (math, science, and language), and learning about the life cycle.

Pumpkin Facts

After perusing the internet for factual information, I found myself wishing for a set of old-fashioned encyclopedias! I read conflicting information about the weight of the largest pumpkin ever grown and about their nutritional value. I consulted a number of sites including the University of Illinois Extension, Good Housekeeping, and History.

Hence, I created three free fact sheets for you to share with your students. These have a color background but can be printed in black and white. The gorgeous watercolor graphics are from Photo Clipz.

Math Activity

Recently, I added this Five Little Pumpkins Ordering Numbers (0-120) activity to a line of seasonal and holiday-themed number sequencing resources available in my Teachers Pay Teachers store.

This open-ended resource can be used for sequencing numbers 0-120 in a variety of ways. It’s a perfect activity for kindergarten, first, or second-grade math.

Choose the numbers and skills that best meet your students’ instructional needs. You can create centers with sets of five or more numbers. Put each set in a baggie. Just mark the cards on the back with letters, dots, or stickers to (help!) keep the sets intact.

The numbers can be consecutive or non-consecutive, within a decade or across a decade number. Your students can sequence numbers by any multiple you pick. They can simply place the pumpkin number cards in order on any flat surface or use the gate mats.

In a similar fashion, you can also use the black and white number cards to create a cut and paste activity. You can print the pumpkins on colored paper or have your students color them. Then, your students can glue them in order on construction paper or sentence strips.

Along with updating the original resource, I added a second set of ready-to-use, easy to prepare black and white pumpkins with a variety of sequences, mixed up within each set of five numbers, in October 2019.

I included optional recording sheets for writing sequences of five numbers from least to greatest and greatest to least. I also added both one hundred and one hundred twenty charts to this resource to support your students’ learning, as needed.

Pumpkin-Themed Math Freebie

When we first took up residence on Turkey Trot Lane over twenty years ago, it was aptly named. We would occasionally see a flock of wild turkeys trotting down the road or across our yard. These sightings gradually diminished and eventually disappeared over the years.

The last time we saw turkeys in their natural habitat was driving along a primary road, which winds through farmland and vineyards, about 20 miles from home. I had to stop and wait for a large flock, including little ones, to leisurely walk across the road. This unexpected experience certainly brightened my day!

Be sure to check out the links below for interesting facts about turkeys.

As Thanksgiving rapidly approaches, I have been busy revising old and creating new turkey-themed resources.

Even and Odd Turkey Feathers

This free Turkey Feather Even & Odd Numbers companion resource can be downloaded from my Teachers Pay Teachers store.

It is an easy to prepare color, cut, and glue activity appropriate for first and second graders. There are sets of feathers for sorting even and odd numbers 1-10, 11-20, and 1-99. Simply print and give each student a pair of bodies and a set of feathers.

First, students color and cut the bodies and feathers. Next, they sort the feathers by even and odd numbers. Then, they glue the correct feathers to each body. The completed turkeys can be used as a bulletin board or wall display. They can also be glued onto paper.

Turkey Feathers in Order 0-120

I also created an open-ended resource, Turkey Feathers in Order, which is available to purchase in my TpT store, for sequencing numbers 0-120 in a variety of ways.

This resource includes color and black/ white options for creating math stations.

Ideas for sequencing numbers include consecutive numbers within a decade (24, 25, 26, 27, 28), consecutive numbers across a decade (67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73), nonconsecutive numbers (18, 35, 41, 58, 75), counting by 2’s, 5’s, or 10’s (30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60), and counting by tens off the decade (42, 52, 62, 72, 82).

I added (November 2019) a second set of ready to use, easy prep black/ white feathers with a variety of sequences, mixed-up within each set of five numbers (consecutive numbers 0-10, 0-20, within a decade 21-120, across a decade 21-120; and non-consecutive numbers 0-10, 11-20, 0-20, within a decade 21-120, and 11-120).

Use these for a color, cut, and glue activity.
